I'll never forget the words our friends said to Ben and I before our wedding day. These words were transformational then and continue to be as we approach our second anniversary. These words will forever be a strong echo as we navigate through this life together.
"Your marriage starts with just you two & it ends with just you two."
This means, in fact, that no matter what life brings us, no matter how many children we have, no matter what trials or joys we face together...at the beginning and end of each day, it's just Ben and I. So, why wouldn't we strive to cultivate the healthiest marriage possible? Why would we allow anything to come in between us?
But it's not that easy. Life comes. Responsibilities take over. Offenses pile up sometimes.
Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Compassion --> Not holding grudges (which is so easy to do) but offering each other so much grace in the process.
Kindness --> Going out of our way to serve each other the best way we can.
Humility --> To ask for forgiveness when needed + recognizing that we don't have all the answers. We are on this journey together.
Gentleness --> To speak with grace and not with the intention to hurt each other
Patience --> To truly listen to each other; having our mouths closed and ears open to hear the other's heart
The choice is ours every single day to clothe ourselves with the best godly characteristics. The choice is ours every single day to pursue each other; honor and love each other, regardless of the other's actions. The choice is ours every single day to grow WITH each other, not separate of each other.
It starts with us.
It ends with us.
This is the commitment we made before God on our wedding day.
And we alone decide what our story will look like.
We alone decide how we can be a blessing to others around us.
We alone decide how we can glorify the Lord, together.
We alone decide to keep Christ at the center of us.
This will forever be the best marriage advice we have ever received and I pray it is for you also.
